Reviving Lebanon’s Manufacturing Sector

Reviving Lebanon's Manufacturing Sector

This one is probably one of the longer articles of this series, but for good reason, as there's a lot to cover for this specific topic. However, this one is arguably the one that may result in the most economic development because of how crucial of a role manufacturing plays in economic growth.

A Quick Lesson in Economics

Lebanon's manufacturing sector was once a vital part of our nation's economy, contributing significantly to employment, GDP, and overall development. However, the sector has faced many, many challenges in recent years, resulting in a decline in productivity, competitiveness, quality, and standard. These challenges include a lack of investment, outdated technology, and limited access to resources, which have left many manufacturing businesses struggling to survive.

The Challenges They Face

Lack of investment: The current economic situation has made it difficult for investors to put their money into the manufacturing sector, further limiting the growth and modernization of businesses (and, essentially, our economy).

Outdated technology: Many Lebanese manufacturers still rely on outdated machinery and production techniques, putting them at a competitive disadvantage. Modern technology is essential for economic growth.

Limited access to resources: Lacking raw materials and facing energy problems, Lebanon has faces shortages in all of these areas due to the economic situation and lack of infrastructure development.

How We Can Help

Investment: Without any doubt, investing in the Lebanese manufacturing sector is a risk not many of us can take on, especially given the current economic state of our country. However, for those of us who have extensive expertise and strong connections in the manufacturing industry, they may well be the ones who are capable of taking on the opportunity to make a significant impact on our country's economic development. Through investments, Lebanese manufacturers will be able to bring in never-before-seen, state-of-the art machinery and methods of manufacturing that's capable of producing high-quality products that can compete in global markets. This, in turn, can lead to outsourcing opportunities to companies abroad, increased exports and, ultimately, a return on investment for you as investors. Again, while this approach might not be suitable for all of us, it is worth considering for those with the resources, expertise, and commitment to drive the positive change in our country's manufacturing sector that we desperately need.

Form a Diaspora Initiative Tackling This Matter: If you're part of a Lebanese diaspora network, it would be a brilliant idea to bring members together to create a dedicated initiative focused on supporting the manufacturing sector in Lebanon. By leveraging the collective skills, resources, investments, and connections within the networks with companies worldwide, the initiative can strongly and commandingly drive the effort towards strengthening our manufacturing sector.

How To Structure This Diaspora Initiative

I will be going the extra mile here and tell you all exactly how we need to approach creating a designated initiative about this matter properly:

Step 1: Assemble a team of diaspora members who have a strong background in manufacturing, are passionate about the cause, and are willing to contribute their time and resources.

Step 2: Do the necessary market research, make yourselves familiar with Lebanon's current manufacturing sector (get in touch with stakeholders, experts in the field, etc.), and outline the initiative's goals.

Step 3: Plan out the whole operation and the strategies to achieve them (think about what needs to be done, how to improve on what exists, costs involved and required funding to make things work). Things the initiative should be all of the following:

a) Prioritize securing investments/funding for Lebanese manufacturing firms, be it from members of the initiative, members of the diaspora network, or any other sources. New machinery and new manufacturing methods are needed and necessary to stimulate economic growth.

b) Transferring your knowledge and expertise to these manufacturing companies.

c) Leveraging your international networks to help Lebanese manufacturers find new markets for their products, establish partnerships, and secure supply chain resources.

Step 4: Identify Lebanese manufacturing companies to reach out to that align with the mission. Secure partnerships with global companies, organizations, and industry leaders to facilitate things. Set milestones, go after them, get things done, repeat.

A Quick Lesson in Economics

A lot of families have been struggling to pay bills and make ends meet, causing a lot of children and young adults to miss out on a quality education. Worse, this has caused a significant increase in child labor, and college students have been forced to drop out or go to extreme extents to keep their dreams and aspirations alive. Not only is this taking away their basic right to a quality education, but, worse, robs children of their childhood, has a huge negative effect on the physical and mental health of our children and young adults, and, if this issue becomes widespread, perpetuates the cycle of poverty and reduces the potential for economic growth.

Invest In Our Youth

To ensure that we don't create a stagnant state of no economic development and reach a point of no return, we need to address the issues and invest in the future of our young people, who are the key to the future of our country. Without granting them access to quality education, the future of our country is in jeopardy. One effective way to tackle this issue is by funding school-level and college-level scholarships, which can support families struggling to pay for their children's education and provide young people with the opportunity to reach their full potential.

How We Can Help

School-level scholarship fund: The JOBSEEQR Scholarship Fund is a merit-based fund we've set up to help underprivileged children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 18 pursue a proper education, while alleviating some or all educational expenses for families in need, giving them a bit more breathing space when it comes to covering expenses while their children are able to continue their education. Since we just got the news earlier this week that the fund has been registered, I will be setting up the donation portal over the next few days and it will be out really soon. Make sure you give us a follow on Instagram (@jobseeqr) to know when it's officially available!

College-level scholarship fund: Last July, Impact Lebanon announced that they have set up a college-level scholarship fund. If you'd like to donate, visit impactlebanoncharity.org. A big shoutout to Impact Lebanon (@impact.lebanon on Instagram) for the amazing work and all the effort they put in to make a difference, you guys are truly amazing for everything you do, much love to you all. ❤️

A Quick Lesson in Economics

Given the economic state that the country is in, our people are struggling to make ends meet, especially with how low jobs pay against how relatively expensive everything has become. The best way we can tackle this is by creating jobs for them that pay better. To get a bit more technical with the economics, this increases consumer spending, which would lead to economic growth, especially since employees are getting paid with money that's coming from outside Lebanon. The easiest way we can give our people the opportunities they deserve is (you guessed it!) through hiring them.

How Hard Is It To Hire Lebanese?

Providing Lebanese people with jobs is what we specialize in, it's the whole point of our platform! If you want to hire Lebanese, we'll actually recruit the very best personnel for the job for you. We hire both remotely and in-person, and our amazing partners at Omnipresent facilitate things like salary payments for remote employees, visa applications, and much, much more. All you have to do is visit jobseeqr.co/recruit, check out what we do, and sign up or schedule a demo with us.

"Do We Benefit?"

I hate bringing this up, but since we're here, I might as well do so. It's our duty as Lebanese expats to give our fellow Lebanese people the leverage to succeed, knowing how amazingly capable, hardworking, and intelligent our people are, and giving them what they truly deserve. In return, they'll take the job, work hard, achieve great things, and contribute to the growth of your company. Along with the feeling of fulfillment by handing these people a second chance in life, that's all there is to it. Period.

Now, I will not say any names, but certain Lebanese CEOs across the U.S. have told me "Ah okay, you should have told me to hire Lebanese because it's cheaper rather than talk about helping people, that's what I care about." (Yes, I'm actually serious).

I mean sure if your name was John Smith or Benedict Cumberbatch then I would've mentioned that in order to convince you to do so... You've been in the U.S. for only a few years, so what is it then? You made your money with your little company and threw your whole Lebanese identity away?

If you're reading this, please don't be like those people. Let's build bridges, not destroy every last glimmer of hope we have left. We're better than this. Our country and our people need us more than ever, so let's do what's right and not act selfishly.

Help Lebanese Companies Expand To External Markets

Help Lebanese Companies Expand To External Markets

A Quick Lesson in Economics

With limited options for growth within Lebanon (and all this potential, capability, creativity, and hard work of our amazing people going to waste), it would be a great idea to help certain companies expand to markets outside Lebanon. This move can strongly stimulate economic growth, because, logically speaking, money is coming into Lebanon from overseas via these companies.

The Challenge They Face

HOWEVER, expanding to new markets is far from easy. It's like that one time Ryan Reynolds said "I'm on that new diet where you eat everything and pray for a miracle." It can be a complex and challenging process, requiring significant resources and expertise, but knowing our people, there's nothing they aren't capable of if given the leverage. That's where we as the Lebanese expatriate/diaspora body come in and give them that leverage.

How We Can Help

Using our wealth of knowledge, connections, and expertise to help businesses expand to markets outside of Lebanon.

Market insights: If the market in question is your specialty, provide valuable information on the culture, consumer behavior, and business practices in the target market.

Business connections: Use your personal and professional networks to help businesses connect with potential customers or partners in the target market.

Language support: Businesses could use your help translating labels on their products as well as their services as they expand to a specific country.

Legal and regulatory support: If you come from a legal background or have regulatory expertise in the target market, you can help businesses navigate local laws and regulations.

Marketing support: If you have marketing expertise, you can help businesses develop effective marketing strategies and promotional materials for the target market.

Logistical support: Helping businesses navigate logistical challenges such as shipping, customs regulations, and other local requirements in the target market goes a long way.

Here's an even better idea: If you're part of a Lebanese diaspora network, propose an initiative which aims towards targeting companies across Lebanon that have the potential to excel abroad and work alongside them to make that a reality, which, in turn, puts these companies at the forefront of our country's economic development. Bring together a group of individuals with several years of expertise across many different fields, and plan things out however you think is most fitting.

How to Get Started

Network with company founders on LinkedIn, educate them on this matter (maybe even send them this article explaining to them what got you to them), and, from there, do your magic and help them out with expansion as much as you can. No matter how small your contribution is, it will make all the difference in the world.
