7 Tips to Combat Job Search Blues

You‘re sitting in the corner of your room, with only your bed and laptop as your companions for weeks on end. You open LinkedIn, your modern-day tormentor, and begin the familiar routine of applying to jobs, only to be met with silence. As you scroll through the feed, you see yet another “I’m thrilled to announce my new position as…” post. The tightness in your chest intensifies. You can’t shake the feeling that everyone else has their life together—everyone except you.

But here’s the truth: You’re not alone. This struggle is more common than you think. Job searching is a difficult journey, it makes you feel stuck, trapped in a Sisyphean loop, where your efforts seem to be for naught. Does this describe your situation right now? Limit Job Searching Time

Dedicate 1- 2 hours every day to job search, set a goal to apply to 2 or 3 jobs a day at maximum, take your time and effort to perfect your application and resume using the STAR method, instead of mindlessly applying all day and eventually burning out. Once the time is up, log off your laptop and try to not to think about anything job search related.

Acknowledge Small Wins

Sometimes, we tend to forget how far we’ve come in our journey just because we didn’t get the job. Taking the time to curate a good job application, getting a call for an interview, or adding a new update to your resume are all milestones worth celebrating!

Log Off

When’s the last time you hung out with your friends? Read a book or watched a TV show? Take a walk in nature—I know you haven’t done that in a while. Grounding yourself by simply enjoying the scenery outside has many physical and psychological benefits. It can boost your mood and remind you that there’s more to life than just jobs!

It’s Not You, It’s The Job Market

Whether you’re a fresh graduate or someone with 5+ years of experience, finding a job today is a challenge for everyone.

According to The International Labour Organization report, unemployment rates are expected to remain high at 9.8% through the end of 2024, driven by ongoing political instability, conflict and economic crisis. Additionally, the lasting impact of the pandemic, which dealt a significant blow to the job market in 2020, continues to shape the employment landscape today.

Imposter Syndrome is a Feeling, Not a Reality

Don’t let self-doubt keep you from applying to jobs. By hesitating, you’re only limiting your potential and missing out on new opportunities. Take a risk, What do you have to lose? Give it your best effort now, so you won’t be left wondering ‘what if’ later.

Reflect

You’ve got the free time that many people dream of. Take a breath and think what’s next?

Volunteer with local charities or even consider a career change. Take courses in your domain or subjects you find interesting. Coursera offers many free courses in a variety of domains like Business, Computer Science, etc.…it’s never too late to learn something new!

Seek Professional Help

Job search depression is a real problem, one that some of you might even relate to you as you read this. In Lebanon, discussing mental health is often considered taboo. Lebanese youth fear judgement by their families and communities, leading them to suffer in silence.

It’s time to challenge the stigma and prioritize mental health. In the scope of job search, therapy offers the support you need to manage stress, rebuild confidence, help you reset and continue your job search in a better state of mind. There are several resources available, despite the economic challenges, including NGOs and community organizations like EMBRACE, IDRAAC and many more that offer mental health services, sometimes at low or no cost.
